Gilgit is the Capital city and and a district of Gilgit-Baltistan, located just 10 km off Karakoram Highway between Chilas and Karimabad. Beyond Gilgit there is no big town or city within the distance of about 450 km in any direction, making Gilgit the most important trade center in the region. Overall the whole district is a valley starting from Shandur Pass in the west, to the Duo Pani - a point where Gilgit River joins Hunza River.
Predominantly, the region is very cold but the summer season is brief and hot, with temperature rising up to 40 °C sometimes. As a result of this extremity in the weather, landslides and avalanches are quite common in the area. The literacy rate in Gilgit city is comparatively high as compared to other districts of Gilgit-Baltistan. There are may tourist attractions in the region: Naltar Valley with Naltar Peak, Nomal Valley and Khunjerab Pass.
