Bahawalpur was a state founded in 1802 by Nawab Muhammad Bahawal Khan II. State of Bahawalpur remaind independent under the British rule. Bahawalpur became part of Pakistan in 1947. When the four provinces of Pakistan were created in 1955, Bahwalpur became part of Punjab province.
Bahawalpur district has lot of historical places to visit. Uch Sharif is a nearby ancient town, used to have one of the largest universities in the world where scholars from all over the world used to come for studies. A prominent university, Islamia University Bahawalpur, previously Jamia Abbasia, was established in Bahawalpur in 1925.
