Punjab is the most populous province of Pakistan, and the second largest province in area after Balochistan. During the partition of British India in 1947 it was divided into two, with one part given to India. It is land of the five rivers,the Indus, Chenab, Jhelum, Ravi and Sutlej, which passes through the province.
It is very fertile region along the river valleys, while deserts can be found near the border with Rajasthan and the Sulaiman Range. It contains the Thar and Cholistan deserts.
Capital of Pujab is Lahore, the second biggest city in Pakistan. Punjab has been the cradle of civilization since time immemorial. The ruins of Harappa show an advanced urban culture that flourished over 5000 years ago. Taxila, another historic landmark also stands out as a proof of the achievements of the area in learning, arts and crafts in bygone ages.
The forts, palaces, gardens, mosques, mausoleums, are eloquent reminders of the great tradition in Muslim architecture.
